Charm Bracelets – a quick history

February 2, 2009 · Filed Under Art Deco Bracelet

Charm bracelets are hugely popular, always have been in fact.

They first started out around 400 B.C, according the Jewellery Information Centre and were worn by the Babylonians, Persians Hittites.  Back then, the charms on the bracelets were spiritual and religious in nature and although the charm bracelets that you get today are more fashion orientated, isn’t still a spiritual choice you make when you decide your charms?

If you have a charm bracelet, then your probably one of those people who never gets a bad birthday gift. I mean, you just specify what charms you want and hey presto!  And the beauty of owning a charm bracelet is that you’ll still be surprised at what charms you get as the choice of them is so huge.

This tradition of giving charms as presents was actually started in WW II, where soldiers stationed in European cities would pick up charms to send home to loved ones.

The history is so lovely to charm bracelet (I could’ve typed charming there, but resisted the urge) that you can see why they’re so popular.

I know several people who have a variety of charms all showing off various themes.  I just have the one charm bracelet myself, and my favourite charm?  A little solid silver panther.  Doesn’t quite fit in with my other Art Deco Jewellery collection, but I love it anyway.
